چکیده

In this paper we present a simple, but effective method of creating and exploiting diversity from packet retransmissions in systems that employ nonbinary modulations such as PSK and QAM. This diversity results from differing the symbol mapping for each packet retransmission. By developing a general framework for evaluating the bit error rate (BER) upper hound with multiple transmissions, a criterion to obtain optimal symbol (re)mappings is attained for memoryless AWGN channels. The optimal adaptation scheme reduces to solutions of the Quadratic Assignment Problem (QAP). Symbol mapping adaptation only requires a small increase in receiver complexity hut provides very substantial BER gains.

Symbol mapping diversity design for packet retransmissions through fading channels

In this work we present a simple, but effective method of enhancing and exploiting diversity from multiple packet transmissions in systems that employ nonbinary linear modulations such as PSK and QAM. This diversity improvement results from redesigning the symbol mapping for each packet transmission. Using a general framework for evaluating the upper bound of bit error rate (BER) with multiple ...

Log-likelihood Ratio Based Optimum Mappings Selection for Symbol Mapping Diversity with -QAM

Abstract— In this paper, a packet combining method known as symbol mapping diversity (SMD) is investigated. In an SMD scheme, the bit-to-symbol mapping in -ary modulation is varied among multiple transmissions of the same packet (e.g., ARQ). It has been shown that multiple transmissions of the same packet using SMD provide better bit error performance than a scheme where the same bit-to-symbol ...

Symbol mapping diversity in iterative decoding/demodulation of ARQ systems

This paper presents a simple, yet effective method of enhancing the inherent diversity among packet retransmissions in digital communication systems that employ high-order modulations such as M -PSK and M -QAM through frequency-selective channels. Diversity is enhanced by uniquely redefining the bitto-symbol mapping for each retransmission. Finding the optimal mappings leads to iterative soluti...

Hybrid ARQ Symbol Mapping in Digital Wireless Communication Systems Based on the Quadratic 3-dimensional Assignment Problem (Q3AP)

We report on the development of algorithms for solving the Quadratic 3-dimensional Assignment Problem (Q3AP). The application is a hybrid ARQ scheme for enriching diversity among multiple packet transmissions by optimizing the mapping of transmission symbols to data. Our current exact algorithm, based on a reformulation linearization technique, solves Q3AP instances of size 13 or smaller. Our f...

Combined Packet Retransmission Diversity and Power Adjustment Scheme for High Speed Wireless Networks

The introduction of High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) in the 3GPP R5 standard will greatly improve the bearer capacity of the mobile network and make the dream of multimedia communications, anytime and anywhere, come true. One of the central features of HSDPA concept is advanced physical layer retransmission scheduling employing soft combining gain, incremental redundancy, and low retra...
